Economics of alternative growth path, time of calving and breed type combinations across southern Australian beef cattle environments: grass finishing at the Victorian experimental site

چکیده
The Beef CRC “Regional Combinations” project and its biophysical outcomes have been described in a range of journal articles and project reports. In this project, different combinations of beef cattle genetics, growth/nutritional pathways and calving seasons were examined across a number of sites in southern Australia for achievement of targeted market specifications. The information provided in these papers and reports allows identification and evaluation of the most profitable regional beef cattle production systems. The focus of this paper is on the Victorian experimental site, where the cattle were finished to slaughter weight on pasture. A range of breed types was included with emphasis on high retail beef yield and high intramuscular fat. Two different growth treatments were imposed following weaning (Fast ~ 0.8 kg/day, Slow ~ 0.6 kg/day), and autumn and spring calving systems were also compared. The effects on carcase and meat quality and enterprise profitability were then examined. Carcase weight and faster growth were the main drivers of profitability at the Victorian site. There were only small and mostly not significant differences between the various sire type groups for carcase weight, except for Wagyu progeny, which had lower slaughter and carcase weights compared with other groups. Furthermore, the results have demonstrated the effect of using BREEDPLAN EBVs for selection of the most appropriate sires to produce carcases with the best compliance to the targeted market. Selection for individual carcase traits had significant effects in one generation, and responses were quite consistent under different growth regimes. In this experiment, there was little difference in mean gross margins between autumn and spring calving.

Comparison of Landim and Africander cattle in southern Mozambique: II. Female fertility, reproduction, and beef offtake.
Fertility and reproductive performance of Landim and Africander females were compared using data collected from 1968 to 1981 at the Chobela Research Station in Mozambique. Breeds were managed together and grouped by age and sex, except when separated for breeding. Traits were relative fertility (probability of fertile females calving from the first breeding season), age at first calving, first ...

This study had the objective of determining the fertility and calving ease of small holder indigenous cattle herds inseminated with imported semen from proven sires. Sixty one indigenous cows of different breed origin (Bunaji, Sokoto Gudali and Rahaji) were selected from different herds across Jigawa state-Nigeria, and were used for this study. The selected dams were inseminated with semen from...
متن کاملLength of concentrate finishing affects the fatty acid composition of grass-fed and genetically lean beef: an emphasis on trans-18:1 and conjugated linoleic acid profiles.
Intensively finishing cattle on a high-grain diet is generally used to enhance marbling, whereas extensively finishing on grass is known to provide improved muscle fatty acid profiles. The objective of this study was to evaluate to what extent intensive concentrate finishing (0, 1 or 2 months) can be combined with forage feeding without negatively affecting the fatty acid profile of genetically...
متن کاملAn overview of crossbreeding in beef cattle with reference to the Southern African situation
An increasing number of commercial beef producers direct themselves to crossbreeding systems in which crossbred animals have higher merit in reproduction, growth and end product. It has been claimed that heterosis in a sound crossbreeding program could increase the productivity in the beef cow herd by as much as 26% over a comparable straight breeding program. The availability of diverse beef c...
متن کاملReproductive inefficiencies and opportunities in dairy and beef cattle in Australia
Reproductive performance is a key driver of the economics of dairy and beef breeding herds. In the absence of hormonal treatment to induce or stimulate lactation, regular parturition and initiation of lactation are key events directly affecting the average daily milk production of dairy herds, culling decisions and farm gross margins. Thus efficient reproductive management is a critical prerequ...
